How do settlement shifts in and out of (un)favored spaces correlate to the quality of the soil?

The subproject ‘Favor – Disfavor? Resource Development in Marginal Spaces’ compares settlement dynamics with land-use phases during the Bronze Age. Whilst this period, improved cultivation techniques developed, land use expanded and intensified, and there was an increased social distinction. The general aim is to explain the movement of people in and out of favored (Hegau) and unfavored spaces (Baar, Upper Swabia) in the light of the quality of the soil and the associated additional resources. The specific focus is on the resource complex including settlement, cultivation, ground knowledge, climate and soil.
